Daily Life

A Day in the Life of a resident

To let you see just what it’s like living at Doddington Lodge, we thought the best way would be for you to have a residents point of view

‘A friend of mine used to say “after you’ve reached seventy, just waking up to see the new day is good anyway.” Here in Doddington Lodge the day starts even better….We’re certain we’re not going to get flooded at 1100ft above sea level….. What’s more after rising, the worry of clearing up after breakfast and before somebody calls or the milkman needs paying, has gone. In the parlance of some years ago “We’ve got it made.”

I choose to have only one companion with my kipper at breakfast in my room, its called “The Telegraph Crossword.” Others here, prefer the company of their fellows with their cereal, eggs and bacon served in the well-furnished dining room.

We have all been allowed to arise in our own good time, as far as I can see, and are now busy with our own things until the interruption of the elevenses trolley with its loads of decisions…. Tea, coffee, this biscuit or that, oh!...and hot or cold milk etc. etc. At this stage I’m avoiding exercises, religious meetings, and equally interesting gatherings. Meantime lunch variations have been canvassed, discussed and decided on an individual basis. I choose to stick with my crossword for lunch having failed to master few clues in the morning. Then I’m smug at avoiding the jungle of desserts afterwards. Mind you, miraculously I have ordered a few items of grocery with my lap top, although I’m computer dump. Often, as these items are delivered they clink like “Pearls of Sin” but everyone pretends not to hear as they enter my own deep shelf and small fridge in my room.

And so Poirot, or his like on television for a couple of hours and frequent naps with the consequence of multiple unsolved murders by the residents of the lodge as we rouse for high tea. An evening stroll thro’ the pleasant grounds perhaps? Scrabble or cards maybe, before the evening drink and the good book in bed?

My new family, whom I have joined, are the staff here who provides me with a splendid sense of security. They are ready to rescue me from falling off my walking frame sober, or any other similar indignity, with professional skill and good humour. I’m no longer dependant on willing relatives or friends.

Come and see!’
